Weekly Grant Round-Up

The United States Department of Transportation (DOT) recently announced a pilot program for its Reconnecting Communities grant. This program funds projects that address infrastructure barriers, restore community connectivity and improve people's lives with local transportation. Local governments can apply for planning grants through this program. These grants fund studies for removing, retrofitting, or mitigating an existing transportation facility to restore community connectivity. Planning grants can also be used for public engagement, encouraging community participation in local transportation activities. The Reconnecting Communities has $150 million in total funding for planning grants, with a 20% non-federal match required. Applications are due September 30, 2024.

The Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) invests in programs that improve American community life. Their Game On - Community Places to Play initiative funds projects that enhance the quality, safety, and accessibility of local athletic spaces for young people. Funds from this grant are awarded to indoor and outdoor sports facilities that enable local community access to organized youth sports. This includes, but is not limited to, basketball, baseball, soccer, football, lacrosse, and volleyball. LISC will prioritize proposals demonstrating how capital improvement will enhance youth development programming, which includes life skills workshops, workforce development, and academic support. This program is open to municipal Parks and Recreation departments that partner with local nonprofits! Awards range from $50,000 to $100,000 with a required 50% match, and applications are due September 5, 2024.

The Department of Transportation's Railroad Crossing Elimination (RCE) program is open to local governments. This program funds eligible planning and construction projects to make railway crossings safer, for both highway-rail and pathway-rail grade crossings. Eligible projects include grade separations; track relocations; installing safety devices, signals, and signs; and planning projects for future larger-scale improvements. This program has $1,148,809,580 set aside in federal funding, with a required 20% non-federal match from applicants. Applications are due September 23, 2024.

Norfolk Southern's Thriving Communities grant program is open to public nonprofits and municipalities. This grant funds projects that promote economic development and support community resiliency within Norfolk Southern's rail network. This program prioritizes projects within the foundation's focus areas: Safety, Sustainability, Workforce Development, and "Thriving Communities." Organizations applying for this program must operate within 30 minutes of Norfolk Southern's rail line. Awards are up to $50,000, and applications are due by October 1, 2024.
